Ehsan “Essy” Knopf is an Australian-American writer and filmmaker. The son of migrants from the US and Iran, Ehsan grew up in tropical Far North Queensland, Australia before moving south to Sydney to study journalism and filmmaking.

Ehsan’s first feature documentary is Flying Solo (2017). The film chronicles the hopes and dreams of three people with Down syndrome, as well as their parent’s fears for their future.

Prior to Flying Solo, Ehsan completed a short documentary series on online dating, Lovesick: The Web Series (2014), and a web documentary about pop cultural figure Conan the Barbarian, titled Finding Conan (2014). In 2013 he completed the short films The Talented Mr Digby, The Rise of AJ Domino and Jackey Jackey.

Over the year Ehsan has worked in a range of roles across film, TV and online, including more recently as a producer for national media outlet 9news.com.au. Ehsan has written an array of original, high-performing stories for readers Australia-wide. He recently relocated to Los Angeles, California, where his role has seen him covering major events ranging from the 2016 US Election to the 2017 Oscars Red Carpet.

Ehsan has qualifications in film production, journalism and communications. In 2013 he completed a Graduate Diploma in Documentary at the Australian Film, Television & Radio School. In 2012 he completed a master’s thesis analyzing the cultural role of storytelling in role-playing video games. He also holds a Certificate IV in Screen and Media at Metroscreen and a Masters of Journalism & Communication at the University of New South Wales.

His work credits include writing for Australian news websites ninemsn.com.au and smh.com.au, as well as a range of production houses including Shine Australia, Beyond Productions and Essential Media.
